Le grandi montagne bianche (“albus” in Latino), secondo la leggenda, sono i corpi dei Titani pietrificati da Poseidone che giacciono lì dal tempo della Titanomachia, la guerra fra Titani e Dei che ha visto trionfare Zeus.

According to legend, the great white mountains (“albus” means white in Latin) are the bodies of the Titans petrified by Poseidon which lie there since the time of the Titanomachy: the war between the Titans and the Gods in which Zeus triumphed.

Oggi sono inclusi nel Parco Nazionale del Cileno e del Vallo di Diano. Il parco, vicino a Salerno, è vasto e ricco di paesaggi diversi: colline movimentano lo sguardo di continuo e montagne si ergono toccando anche i 1200 metri di altezza. Foreste e fiumi corrono al mare che si perde in infinite tonalità di blu.

Today they are part of the Cileno and Vallo di Diano National Park. The park, which is located near Salerno, is vast and rich in different landscapes: hills constantly enliven the gaze and mountains rise reaching up to 1200 meters high. Forests and rivers lead to the sea which loses itself in infinite shades of blue.

Il parco è benedetto da molte sorgenti e tracciato da fiumi che scorrono in gole profonde: la roccia calcarea infatti si è lasciata modellare dallo scorrere dell’acqua che ha creato inghiottitoi mozzafiato, grandi buchi fra le valli con pareti alte anche 150 metri a formare suggestivi anfiteatri naturali.

The park is blessed by many springs and it's traced by rivers that flow in deep gorges: shaped by the flow of the water, the limestone rock created breathtaking sinkholes, large holes in the valleys with walls up to 150 meters high which form suggestive natural amphitheaters.

L’acqua fa da sovrana e ha creato in questa zona grotte stupende: luoghi magici che più di 500 mila anni fa proteggevano insediamenti rupestri dei primi uomini che adoravano le acque come divinità.
Le grotte di Castelcivita si inoltrano nella terra in un buio profondo che se illuminato rivela cascate di pietre lucenti dalla bellezza sconvolgente.

Water reigns supreme and it has created wonderful caves in this area: magical places that more than 500,000 years ago protected the rock settlements of the first men who worshiped the water as a deity.
The caves of Castelcivita go into the earth in a deep darkness that reveals cascades of shining stones of overwhelming beauty when illuminated.

A Sant'Angelo a Fasanella, cittadina che sorge nei pressi della risorgenza dell’Auso, una grotta è infusa di una misteriosa magia, una purezza in cui San Francesco, in visita al Santuario di San Michele Arcangelo che trova ubicazione all’interno della grotta, non osa entrare. Questa è l’unica chiesa cattolica che non è stata consacrata dai riti dell’uomo, ma dall’arcangelo in persona, se così si può dire, che ha lasciato l’impronta del suo piede sull’altare.

In Sant'Angelo a Fasanella, a town located near Auso's spring, a cave is infused with a mysterious magic, a purity in which St. Francis, who was visiting the Sanctuary of St. Michael the Archangel located inside the cave, did not dare to enter. This is the only Catholic church that has not been consecrated by the man's rites, but by the archangel in person, if we can say so, who left his footprint on the altar.

Credenti o meno, le grotte producono un senso di mistero e rispetto negli uomini. Dalle loro radici fino alle alte vette accese dal bagliore del cielo, i monti Alburni sono altari alla Natura.

Believers or not, the caves produce a sense of mystery and respect in mankind. From their dark roots to the high peaks lit by the glow of the sky, the Alburni mountains are altars to Nature.
