L’italiano è la quarta lingua più studiata al mondo. Questo può sorprendere se si pensa che l’Italia non ha un territorio molto esteso e che non è stata una potenza coloniale.
Da queste considerazioni è dunque lecito chiedersi perché l’italiano venga studiato così tanto nel mondo.

Italian is the fourth most studied language in the world. This may surprise you if you consider that Italy does not have a very large territory and that it was not a colonial power.
Considering this, it is therefore reasonable to wonder why Italian is studied so much worldwide.

In ordine, prima dell’italiano troviamo l’inglese, il francese e lo spagnolo: le lingue di quei Paesi che durante il colonialismo hanno fatto la loro fortuna e la cui lingua si è diffusa così ampiamente anche in virtù del loro predominio commerciale in zone molto distanti dalla madrepatria.
Ma per giustificare la quarta posizione dell’italiano, bisogna fare ragionamenti diversi da quelli visti per le lingue che la precedono in classifica.

In the rankings, before the Italian language we find English, French and Spanish: the languages of the countries that during colonialism made their fortune and whose language spread so widely thanks also to their commercial dominance in areas which were far away from the motherland.
But to justify Italian's fourth position, we must make different considerations from those made for the other languages in this ranking.

Moltissimi italiani sono emigrati in quegli anni e hanno portato con loro la filosofia, il modo di vivere e la cultura italiana diffondendola tra i popoli che li hanno ospitati e presso i quali hanno costruito con il tempo la loro fortuna mescolandosi a persone di qualsiasi estrazione culturale e sociale.

Many were the Italians that migrated in those years spreading their philosophy, their way of life and the Italian culture amongst the population who hosted them and with whom they built their fortune over time, mingling with people of any culture and social background.

Oggi, in tutto il mondo ci sono milioni di discendenti di italiani che sognano quel mare e quelle montagne, scenari mozzafiato dei ricordi nostalgici dei loro genitori o nonni.

Today, throughout the world there are millions of Italian descendants who dream of that sea and those mountains, nostalgic memories of those breathtaking sceneries that were narrated to them by their parents or grandparents.

La cultura italiana non esercita il suo fascino solo sui discendenti di italiani, ma attrae persone da ogni dove: si pensi al fatto che l’UNESCO, agenzia dell’ONU che promuove la pace, il rispetto universale per la giustizia, per i diritti umani, le libertà fondamentali e l’integrazione fra le nazioni attraverso l’istruzione, la scienza e la cultura, ha in Italia la più grande concentrazione al mondo di siti patrimonio dell’umanità.

Italian culture does not exert its charm only on Italian descendants, but attracts people from all over the world: let’s just think of the fact that UNESCO, a UN agency that promotes peace, universal respect for justice, for human rights, fundamental freedoms and integration among nations through education, science and culture, has in Italy the greatest quantity of world heritage sites.

Escludendo chi lo impara per una prospettiva di lavoro o di formazione in Italia, le più comuni motivazioni che fanno dell’italiano una delle lingue più studiate al mondo sono dunque il desiderio di ritrovare le proprie origini o di avvicinarsi alla cultura italiana: la maggior parte delle persone che studiano l’italiano, lo fanno per interesse o piacere personale e questo ci lusinga molto!

Excluding those who learn it for work perspective or training opportunity in Italy, the most common reasons that make Italian one of the most studied languages in the world are, therefore, the desire to rediscover one’s origins or to get more acquainted with the Italian culture: most people who study Italian do it for personal interest or pleasure and this honour us a lot!
