Gli abitanti di questo paese aggrappato al pendio della Montagna Grande a più di 1000 metri di altitudine non sono originari di queste regioni, ma provengono dall’oriente.

The inhabitants of this village, which lies on the hillside of Montagna Grande at more than 1000 meters above sea level, are not natives of these regions but come from the east.

In una lettera alla sua amata Elda, Gabriele D’Annunzio, noto scrittore e poeta italiano, raccontando della sua visita a Scanno scrive: «Vedessi che costumi strani e splendidi portano le donne! Par d’essere in Oriente [...]. Turbanti di seta ricamati d’oro e d’argento, grandi grembiuli fiammanti, maniche larghissime, una ricchezza di pieghe meravigliose».

In a letter addressed to his beloved Elda, Gabriele D’Annunzio, famous Italian writer and poet, writes about his visit to Scanno: «You should see what strange and beautiful outfits the women wear! It feels like being in the Orient […]. Silk turbans embroidered in gold and silver, big and colorful aprons, very broad sleeves, an abundance of wonderful pleats».

Soltanto 80 anni fa, chi visitava Scanno aveva l’impressione di trovarsi in una città abitata da quasi sole donne. Molti degli uomini di Scanno erano pastori costretti dalla transumanza a passare intere stagioni lontano da casa e dalla famiglia, mentre altrettanti, quelli più giovani, emigravano all’estero in cerca di lavoro e fortuna.

Only 80 years ago, those who visited Scanno had the impression of finding themselves in a city populated by women only. A great number of men were shepherds forced to stay away from home and their families for several seasons due to the transhumance, just as many younger men migrated overseas in the hope of finding work and fortune.

A causa del costo elevato del biglietto per le Americhe o per il nord dell’Europa, i giovani partivano da soli accompagnati soltanto dalle promesse fatte alle loro mogli di ritornare prima o poi.

Due to the high price of the ticket for Americas or the north of Europe, young people used to leave alone, accompanied only by the promises made to their wives to return, sooner or later.

Così le donne rimanevano in paese a crescere i figli, aspettando, purtroppo spesso invano, il ritorno dei loro mariti.
Si affaccendavano nelle operazioni quotidiane del tempo che costavano grande fatica e molta determinazione, oltre che forza: il lavoro nei campi, la raccolta della legna e dell’acqua, la filatura, la tessitura e il confezionamento degli abiti, le manutenzioni della casa e molte altre mansioni ricadevano tutte sulle spalle di queste donne.

So women would stay at home to grow their children, waiting for their husband’s return, often, unfortunately, in vain.
They would work hard getting daily duties done which required a lot of determination and strength: the work in the fields, the gathering of the wood and water, spinning, weaving and dress making, housekeeping and many other duties were all on the shoulders of these women.

La vita di paesi come Scanno, in queste e altre regioni montuose d’Italia, è dipesa dal sacrificio delle donne e dalla loro abilità di affrontare con coraggio e mirabile compostezza situazioni difficili e avverse.

Life in villages such as Scanno and in many other mountainous regions of Italy, depended entirely upon these women’s sacrifice and ability to cope with difficult and adverse situations in an admirable and courageous way.

Scanno oggi è annoverata tra i borghi più belli d’Italia ed è nota come la città dei fotografi. Grandi artisti come Hilde Lotz-Bauer, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Mario Giacomelli e molti altri l’hanno visitata per tutto il novecento documentando i suoi scorci fiabeschi e le bellezze naturali che la circondano regalandoci scatti unici e senza tempo!

Scanno today is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and is known as the city of photographers.
