Era passata una quarantina d'anni dalla proclamazione del Regno d'Italia quando un noto giornale di Milano, la Gazzetta dello Sport, decide di organizzare il primo Giro d'Italia.

Forty years had passed since the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy when a well-known Milan newspaper, the Gazzetta dello Sport, decided to organize the first Giro d'Italia.

È così che nel 1909 la celebre gazzetta stampata su carta rosa dà il via a una manifestazione sportiva che perdura sino ai giorni nostri e che non si è mai fermata se non a causa delle grandi guerre.

This is how in 1909 the famous gazette printed on pink paper started a sporting event that continues to the present day and that has never stopped except because of the great wars.

Il Giro d'Italia è una gara ciclistica a tappe che percorrono in lungo e in largo le regioni d'Italia. Su e giù per montagne e colli, in volata attraverso città e campagne, sotto il sole costeggiando il mare, lo scenario della gara è variegato e bellissimo.

The Giro d'Italia is a cycling race in stages that travel the length and breadth of the Italian regions. Up and down mountains and hills, sprinting through cities and countryside, under the sun along the sea, the scenery of the race is varied and beautiful.

Ovunque il Giro passi, città e paesi di tutte le dimensione si vestono di nastri, bandierine, palloncini, fiori e addobbi rosa accogliendolo con feste cittadine. La popolazione si accalca in punti strategici del percorso per vedere sfrecciare i partecipanti sulle loro biciclette, per dar loro supporto offrendo acqua e cibo ai bordi della strada.

Wherever the Giro passes, cities and towns of all sizes are dressed in pink ribbons, flags, balloons, flowers and decorations to welcome it with town festivals. The population gathers on strategic points in the route to see the participants zooming riding their bicycles, to support them giving water and food on the side of the road.

Al vincitore, oltre che al premio in denaro, spetta l'ambita maglia rosa: la maglia che indica il ciclista più veloce del giro. La maglia ciclamino è assegnata al primo della classifica a punti, mentre quella azzurra al primo classificato nelle tappe di montagna. Il primo degli under 25 guadagna invece la maglia bianca.

In addition to the cash prize, the winner gets the coveted pink jersey the jersey that indicates the fastest cyclist of the Tour. The cyclamrote jersey is assigned to the first in the points classification, while the blue jersey is assigned to the first classified in the mountain stages. The first of the under 25s earns the white jersey instead.

Oggi vi partecipano ciclisti da tutto il mondo e insieme al Tour de France e la Vuelta a España si attesta fra i più importanti eventi ciclistici del globo.
