È il 1298 e a Curzola una battaglia cambia completamente non soltanto le dinamiche del paese ma anche le sorti di un giovane mercante ed esploratore veneziano che non avrebbe mai immaginato che dal buio tetro e sconfortante di una cella di un carcere genovese avrebbe fatto conoscere a tutto il mondo le avventure che lo hanno consacrato viaggiatore per eccellenza: Marco Polo.

In 1298 in Curzola a battle completely changed not just the dynamics of the country but also the fate of a young Venetian merchant and explorer. In fact, he would never have imagined that from the gloomy and discouraging darkness of a cell in a Genoese prison he would have been able to spread to the entire world the adventures that have made him the traveler par excellence: Marco Polo.

La storia è però piuttosto bizzarra e persino le coordinate più certe possono nascondere inaspettate sorprese. Profumi d’Oriente, spezie e cibi prelibati, creature mostruose, orizzonti infuocati: leggendo le pagine sognanti de “Il Milione”, tra le molte testimonianze giudicate veritiere ve ne sono molte fantasiose che non passano inosservate, al punto da condurre alla fatidica domanda: quanto c’è di vero nelle parole di Marco Polo?

The story, however, is quite bizarre and even the most assured landmarks can hide unexpected surprises. Oriental scents, spices and delicious food, monstrous creatures, flame-colored horizons: when you read the dreamy pages of "Il Milione", among the many testimonies that are considered true, there are, however, many that are quite fantastical and that do not pass unnoticed; this leads to an inevitable question: how much truth is there in Marco Polo’s words?

Il racconto fu scritto dal compagno di cella Rustichello, un cantastorie del tempo che avrebbe forse fatto prevalere l’immaginazione sulla realtà: d’altra parte l’universo medievale era animato dalla superstizione, dalla magia e dai mostri leggendari, fattori che oggi considereremmo assurdi ma che allora permettevano di interpretare fenomeni che la scienza non era ancora in grado di codificare.

The story was written by his cell mate Rustichello, a storyteller of the time who may have made the imagination prevail over reality: on the other hand the medieval universe was animated by superstition, magic and legendary monsters, factors that today we consider absurd but that during that period allowed to interpret phenomena that science was not able to codify yet.

Non vanno però ignorate le tante prove sull’identità e sui viaggi di Marco Polo: tra queste una misteriosa carta di navigazione, analizzata perfino dall’FBI, che instilla il dubbio che l’abile avventuriero abbia raggiunto l’America ben duecento anni prima di Colombo.

However, we should not ignore the many proofs of Marco Polo's identity and travels: a mysterious navigation chart, that was analyzed even by the FBI, which casts the doubt that the skilled adventurer had been able to reach the American continent two hundred years before Colombo.

Tra le testimonianze più curiose spicca quella del suo matrimonio con una delle figlie del Gran Khan, che lo seguì nella sua Venezia. Quando Marco fu imprigionato, le cognate raccontarono alla Principessa di una sua presunta morte e la giovane donna disperata si suicidò. Molti giurano che la magia delle sere veneziane lungo la Corte del Milion, dove furono effettivamente rinvenuti i resti di una nobildonna orientale, è a volte spezzata dal volteggiare fugace del fantasma della moglie dell’esploratore.

Among the most curious testimonies, there is one about his marriage with one of the Great Khan’s daughters, who followed him to Venice. When Marco was imprisoned, the Princess was told by her sisters-in-law about Marco’s supposed death and therefore the desperate young woman committed suicide. Many people swear that the magic of the Venetian evenings along the “Corte del Milion” (a little Venetian square) -where the remains of an oriental noblewoman were actually found- is sometimes disrupted by the fleeting twist of the explorer's wife ghost.

Una storia da brividi, gli stessi che si provano leggendo le ultime parole da lui pronunciate in punto di morte: “Ho raccontato meno della metà di quello che ho visto”. Quante altre meraviglie avrebbero potuto incantare milioni di sognatori di ogni epoca? Perché di tutta questa storia, oltre il vero e il falso, resta inscalfibile il potere dell’incanto.
